Arabic

In addition to offering four levels of Arabic instruction and classes in Arabic dialects, the University of Wisconsin has a wealth of resources available to students studying Arabic:

The Baytunna Program with the International Learning Community

Meaning 'our house' in Arabic, the Baytunna program gives undergraduate students the opportunity to live and socialize in an Arabic-speaking environment. Students live on campus within the International Learning Community and participate a variety of weekly activities designed to give students greater insight into Arabic culture as well as enhance their language skills. For more information on how to apply, visit the ILC web page.

The UW-Madison Arabic and Persian Immersion Program

For students committed to learning Arabic and who want to challenge themselves academically, UW-Madison offers a summer immersion program for both Arabic and Persian language students. In addition to daily language classes, students pledge to only use Arabic through the course of the program. Students must live on campus through the entirety of the eight week program to facilitate complete language immersion. The program is the equivalent of two semesters of Arabic and students receive eight UW-Madison credit hours upon completion of the program. For more information, visit the program website.

Other Summer Programs

Many students develop their Arabic skills further over the summer by studying in an Arab country. This allows them not only regular practice with native speakers in real-life settings, but first-hand experience with the culture of which the language is a part. Some of the available programs are listed below. None of these are affiliated with the University of Wisconsin, and this list is provided as a service which in no way constitutes a recommendation. If you wish further information on these programs, follow the link or ask your professor about issues like credit transfer or whether they have had experience with the program. If you know of any summer Arabic program which should be included, please let us know.
