To promote and expand the study of North Africa, the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) announces a new grant opportunity available to its membership.
During the 2022-2023 academic year, AIMS will offer small grants (up to $5,000) to member faculty and advanced graduate student members to organize one-day curriculum development seminars to introduce and strengthen the instruction of Maghrib studies at U.S. community colleges and/or minority-serving institutions.
The seminars will promote North African studies to targeted diverse American audiences by situating the Maghrib as an area of study into the larger world. The seminars can propose teaching the Maghrib through discipline-specific approaches or broad overviews; choices of material and approach are open, but applicants must keep in mind that the aim of the seminars is to encourage and introduce curriculum on the Maghrib at institutions in which the Maghrib is currently absent. Seminars may be presented by solo AIMS members or as team-taught presentations. In the case of team taught, at least one applicant must be an AIMS member.
Applications will be assessed on the basis of how introducing the Maghrib will benefit the seminar participants’ educational communities and the feasibility of the proposed arrangements for the seminar, as well as other factors deemed important by the Curriculum Development Committee. AIMS especially encourages projects that promote long-term links with target institutions and faculty.
Summer 2022 may represent an ideal opportunity to initiate a Maghrib Studies Curriculum Development Seminar through your institutions.
Interested AIMS members should send the following materials to the AIMS Curriculum Development Committee at parks@aimsnorthafrica.org by May 1, 2022:
- Cover letter (1 page max.) describing the proposed curriculum development seminar, highlighting themes, pedagogical approach, possible deliverables (e.g., syllabi, individual teaching modules, classroom activities).
- A brief outline of the seminar structure: where (facility); when; target institution(s) and faculty.
- Current CV(s) of presenters.
- Budget, including honoraria, per diem, seminar materials and transportation costs.
Selected applicants will submit a written report to the Curriculum Development Committee within one month of completion of the seminar.
