This full-time position is available from January 2023 on a fixed term basis until 31 December 2025 in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
The post of Lecturer in Arabic and Islamic Studies will contribute to extending the research profile of Islamic Studies at Exeter, particularly in areas related or complementary to Islamic Law, Islamic Theology and the analysis of religious texts in Arabic (and other Muslim world languages, if appropriate). The post replaces Professor Robert Gleave for the period of his three-year British Academy Wolfson Professorship.
The post will include research and teaching in Arabic and Islamic Studies, with preferred focus on Islamic law and theology in the early, premodern or modern periods. The post holder will be also be expected to contribute teaching modules in the field of Islamic Studies more broadly (including new modules to supplement the already strong programme). In research terms, the post holder is expected to compose and publish research in Arabic and Islamic Studies and to be active in developing research programmes in this subject area which will attract significant external funding. The post-holder is expected to play a full and active role in the Centre for the Study of Islam – the Islamic Studies cluster in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. The post holder is also expected to make a contribution to the administration of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the appropriate level.
