The Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellowship is open to undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline currently enrolled at UW-Madison, and provides up to $5,000 in funding for students to pursue an international reporting project. The reporting project is generally undertaken in the summer with an expectation that fellows spend at least two weeks in their research location.
Reporting Fellows pursue independent journalism projects that cover a wide range of issues around the world, including climate change, migration and refugees, global health, and human rights. Reporting Fellows benefit from Pulitzer Center mentorship, networking opportunities, journalism resources, and more. Most importantly, they become part of a vibrant community.

2024 Fellow: Rachel Hale
Hale, who graduated in 2024 from UW-Madison’s honors program with degrees in journalism and political science, reported on Sephardic Jewry in Spain and the Jewish diaspora.
Her project evaluated the impact of Spain’s 2015 citizenship law, which enabled descendants of those expelled from Spain in the 15th century, known as Bnei Anusim, to obtain Spanish citizenship after providing evidence of their ancestry. She also reported on the converso Jews who were forcibly converted as a result of the Inquisition and on efforts to preserve Ladino, a Judeo-Spanish language spoken by Sephardic Jews. 2023 Fellow: Audrey Thibert
Audrey travelled to Tunisia in August of 2023 to conduct interviews for her project, “A Shared Uncertainty: Migration Stories from Tunisia.” Her articles present intimate profiles and tell the stories of people she interviewed during her time in Tunisia. Click here to learn more.
2020 Fellow: Lawrence Andrea
“I feel so lucky to be part of the Pulitzer Center family and am incredibly grateful for the Center. Being a reporting fellow has been the best experience of my career. Traveling to Greece and spending time exploring and digging into the issues surrounding migration was the biggest step yet in my long-term goal of becoming a foreign correspondent.”
