Faezeh Jafari Mohammadabadi

Faezeh Jafari is a Ph.D. Student of Islamic art in the History of Art Department at UW–Madison. She holds a bachelor’s in Carpet Studies from the Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman and a master’s degree from the Tehran University of Art. Her research focuses on Islamic art, Persian carpets, and paintings. She is passionate about exploring Islamic ornaments and motifs in a way to have a better understanding of the society, culture ,and history of the Arab and Persian worlds.

While in Iran, Faezeh worked as a lecturer at the Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, where she taught three courses to undergraduate students including: “Great Persian Carpet Designers and Masters,” “Carpets and Textiles Preservation,” and “Evolution of Persian Motifs: from Ancient to Pahlavid period.” Moreover, she volunteered in three projects on the conservation and preservation of Islamic carpets and textiles in the Carpet Museum of Iran, Saadabad Complex, and Golestan Palace. She worked closely with the museum’s collection of 16th, 18th, and 20th centuries carpets and textiles from Iran, India, Turkey, along with French tapestries, and some nomadic textiles and rugs. Also, she worked as a rug repairer on antique rugs at the Grand Carpet Bazaar of Tehran in 2020.

In her first research paper entitled “Classification of Carpets signed by Mohammad Arjmand Kermani and the affecting factors on its development,” Faezeh concluded how artworks, in her case, the works of a carpet manufacturer like Mohammad Arjmand Kermani (known as “The King of Persian Carpet”), could act as agents and influence the society, economy, culture, and even politics.

Faezeh also submitted an article in Persian entitled, “Comparative Study of Human Images in Hunting Carpets and Miniatures in the Tabriz’s Second School,” in which she explores the visual and characterological relations between Safavid paintings (some illustrations from the Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp, Khamseh Nizami, etc.), and Safavid hunting rugs. In addition, Faezeh was a project assistant in 2020 at the Carpet Museum of Iran. During this project she and Turaj Zhule classified numerous nomadic rugs that belong to sculptor Parviz Tanavoli’s personal collection.
